A day late following the end of year lists but here it is, the movie of the month. Decembers contenders are:

The Thing – Taken on its own merits it is a decent if a little predicable horror. Put into context as a prequel to a remake, it is pointless and totally unoriginal.

Hugo – you probably already know this was my movie of the year, what more is there to say, other than if you haven’t already, go and see it.

Another Earth – The greatest compliment I can pay this movie is to say it is better than Lars von Trier’s Melancholia that it will be compared to. I now expect great things from its star Brit Marling.

50/50 – A perfect blend of genres and styles making a funny and touching movie. The whole cast is great with a special mention for Anna Kendrick who makes every movie she is in a little bit better including the Twilight movies.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows – not as good as the first movie but a worthy sequel with the same blend of action and fun. Stuffy Sherlock Holmes purists will probably hate it! They only real criticism, Noomi Rapace is criminally underused.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – a faithful adaptation of the extremely popular novel. As good as the original Swedish adaptation but sadly no better.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – After a few missteps in his recent career Tom Cruise is back. Setting its stall out with the first film, mission impossible needs to balance great action with silly scenarios and a touch of comedy, this movie gets the blend right and is the best of the sequels.

The cats out the bag Hugo is my movie of the year so I am going to give movie of the month, not to the best movie of the month but the most fun and pleasantly surprising movie of the month:
