Comic book movies don’t get nominated for best picture Oscars but once in a while they are not only better than the nominations but better than the winners. Here are a few examples of movies that won best picture and a comic book movie from the same year that was better.
1990: Driving Miss Daisy (1989) not as good as: Batman (1989)
2002: A Beautiful Mind (2001) not as good as: Ghost World (2001)
2003: Chicago (2002) not as good as: Road to Perdition (2002)
2006: Crash (2004) not as good as: A History of Violence (2005)
2009: Slumdog Millionaire (2008) not as good as: The Dark Knight (2008)
Thanks to Ross McG who said something in jest that actually inspired this blog.
Very thought provoking post! I think The Dark Knight is one of/if not the best comic book movies ever. I also believe if it was nominated last year it would have actually won. But then again I would rather anything beat Slumdog as I really hated that film.
Comic Book Films should have their own awards each year, it would be entertaining to say the least.
Don’t get me wrong there are some really crap one as well but the best should be recognised by the Oscars and not ignored out of snobbery.
haha! great post Fands, glad to have sort of inspired it in a roundabout kind of way, cant claim credit for that..
those are all good choices
i seem to be the only one who finds A History of Violence a bit overrated though. just didnt think there was much to it. Man is suspected of having shady past.. man has shady past.. family stick by him. still a good film though.
If you don’t like that one the other great comic book movies from 2005 were: Sin City, Batman Begins and V for Vendetta.
Damn right about all of these, especially History of Violence. Need to give Ghost World another watch though, been a long time.
