I have one more film (The Descendants) to see before I make my Oscar predictions. Until then, never one to agree with the academy, her are my top five omissions from this years nominations.
Best Motion Picture of the Year – Drive
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role – Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk About Kevin
Best Achievement in Directing – Lynne Ramsay for We Need to Talk About Kevin
Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published – Lynne Ramsay & Rory Kinnear for We Need to Talk About Kevin
Best Documentary, Features - Senna

I agree on Drive being excluded. I mean there are nine Best Pictures so why not throw in one more, and a movie that has received almost universal praise!
I think the big shocker for me was the absence of Michael Fassbender for Best Actor in Shame! Sure a daring role and he did get the Golden Globe nomination
Totally agree, Fassbender did deserve a nomination as did co star Carey Mulligan, I just didn’t feel as strongly about them as the five I picked. I would also have nominated Kirsten Dunst for Melancholia.
Your ‘Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published’ is the ‘Adapted Screenplay’ category I guess. I was amazed to see that WNtTaK wasn’t nominated. I liked the film, but it didn’t bowl me over. Then I read the book, and I was blown away by how faithful the film was to the book, especially given the book is written in the first person. The screenplay is incredibly well done.
Don’t want to spoil the surprise, but The Descendants is another well-polished, slick showcase for Clooney. Could almost be a sequel to Up in the Air.
